What Is the Shimano Tourney CN-HG40 and Which Drivetrains Does It Fit?

The CN-HG40 is Shimano's Tourney-series Hyperglide chain, designed for use with 6, 7, and 8-speed indexed drivetrains running Shimano's Hyperdrive SIS and Dual SIS shifting systems. These are the entry-level indexed shifting architectures found on commuter bikes, city bikes, hybrid bikes, and lower-end road and mountain bikes that use flat-bar or drop bar controls with thumb shifters, trigger shifters, or Revo twist shifters in the 6, 7, or 8-speed configuration. The CN-HG40 uses Hyperglide cog compatibility, meaning the chain's inner plate geometry is shaped to engage cleanly with the profiled teeth on Hyperglide cassettes and freewheels, producing reliable lateral chain movement during shifts rather than the hesitation and chain hang that occurs when non-compatible chain and cog profiles are mixed.

At 116 links the chain is long enough to fit most bike geometries and should be sized to the appropriate length during installation. The CN-HG40 is not compatible with 9, 10, 11, or 12-speed drivetrains, which use progressively narrower chain widths that are incompatible with the wider 6/7/8-speed cog spacing. This is the chain to reach for when replacing a worn chain on any Shimano 6, 7, or 8-speed SIS drivetrain where reliable budget-tier shifting performance is the requirement. It connects with a standard chain pin and does not include a quick link, which must be purchased separately if preferred over a pin-based connection.
