Paul Tolmé from the Cascade Bicycle Club joins us… You know, that little club up in the Seattle area with a measly 10k+ members that does everything from producing the STP (Seattle to Portland) ride, to helping procure $1.3 billion dollars for cycling infrastructure, and helping bring $216 million to school-based bike education programs for kids from elementary to high school. Yeah, that little club! We talk about all of this and a lot more… Enjoy!
Big shout out to Jake, Lance and Matt for giving Washington Bikes and Cascade Bicycle Club a podium for talking about all the work we are doing to improve bicycling in Washington state! Here are a few answers to some of the questions I couldn’t definitively answer during our chat:
* Yes, the number of riders in our three-day Tour Lites is capped, so sign up early! You can real about our Tour Lites, the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic, and all of our other events and big rides here: https://cascade.org/blog/2022/11/2023-events-season-stp-gravel-tour-and-more
* Jake, regarding your questions about the effort to raise fees for the deadliest vehicles, that bill did not get out of committee this year but it’s an issue that WA and other states are looking at due to the data that shows heavier vehicles are responsible for a greater percentage of fatalities for people walking and biking. Here’s a link to the bill summary: https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=1674&Year=2023
* We encourage you and all your listeners in WA to sign up for our action alert emails to stay informed about our priority bills this session, and to submit pro comments to your legislators when they come up for votes. We are seeing an epidemic of traffic violence and the highest rates of fatalities for people biking and walking in two decades due to an increase in reckless and distracted driving. I encourage your listeners to become a member of Cascade Bicycle Club. In addition to all the great member discounts and perks, membership dues go to support our efforts to make bicycling safer in WA. Join at https://cascade.org/
Thank you for the follow up information, Paul! It was great to have you on the podcast and we look forward to supporting Washington Bike and the Cascade Bicycle Club!
