Dialed Cycling Junior Devo Team

Riding and racing bikes is a lot of fun, but the process of getting started can be both daunting and intimidating.  One of the primary goals of the Dialed Cycling Team is to help bring more juniors into the sport of cycling.  In order to achieve this goal, we believe that we need to be the best resource possible for our youth to find success.  Our process includes providing mentors in a safe environment, providing key instruction to develop necessary cycling skills, teaching proper tactics and strategies, and promoting all around bicycle safety.  Our juniors need to be race age 10 (turning 10 years old during the current year) and can be on the Junior Devo Team until they reach race age 18.

Once committed to the Dialed Junior Devo (short for Development) Team, our Juniors will have access to many different disciplines, which will include: road racing, cyclocross, mountain bike racing, time trialing, gravel racing, and the cycling component of triathlon.  Every discipline brings its own set of challenges and skillsets, so there is definitely a lot to learn.  Our juniors can expect to work on and ultimately master the following:

  • Bike Handling
  • Group / Peloton Riding
  • Pace Lining
  • Bike Fit and Positioning
  • General Bike Maintenance
  • Pre-ride Safety Checks
  • Training Programs
  • Rules of the Road
  • Cycling Etiquette
  • Team Code of Conduct
  • Goal Setting
  • Racing Tactics, Strategies, and Teamwork

What is the cost to be on the Dialed Junior Devo Team?

This is a great question and the answer is somewhat subjective.  Unfortunately, getting involved in cycling is not akin to simply purchasing a ball and a pair of cleats.  Cycling can become an expensive sport very quickly when you factor in the cost of the bike(s), training devices, safety equipment, apparel, and race fees. Add to this the cost of a coach, travel expenses, and nutritional supplements, and your head starts to spin!  Fortunately, the Dialed Junior Devo Team does not follow in the footsteps of say a club soccer team where you need to fork over $1500 just to be on the team.  So, how do we make this work?  It all starts with the Dialed Cycling Team (DCT).  DCT is a non-profit organization that was built to support our awesome team of bike racers.  Our non-profit status allows us to receive charitable contributions, and the team’s incredible success has helped attract some fantastic sponsors.  If we can continue this trend, we will be able to underwrite a good portion of our Junior Devo Team’s operational costs.  Yes, there will still be costs for our Juniors to race their bikes, but we will continue to grow and develop the program so we can minimize these costs thus making our sport as accessible to as many youths as possible.

The necessary equipment costs can vary tremendously.  We can help guide you through these waters so you get what you need without overspending.  The cost of being on the team will vary as well.  There will be camps, clinics, workshops, and training sessions that can have an associated fee with them, but the cost has some potential to be underwritten through our operational budget.  Races all have race fees, but the junior’s categories are generally discounted.  The number of races can vary, and again, there will be the possibility that some or all of the race fees are underwritten.  The same can be said for racing apparel, coaching fees, and travel expenses.  The better we do with sponsorship procurement, donations, and fund raising, the less the cost will be for our Juniors.  So, to answer the question regarding the cost to be on the Junior Development Team, the answer is: “It depends.” If you are interested in having your child be on the Dialed Junior Devo Team, we will need to talk more so we can give you a better idea of what the costs might be.  Finally, we will work to have a few scholarships for Juniors who meet certain criteria while maintaining good grades in school.

    • If you have some specifics skills that are well suited to helping support the team at any level, donate your TALENT!

Dialed Cycling Lab and how it supports  the Dialed Cycling Team:

In addition to the Dialed Cycling Team, is the Dialed Cycling Lab (DCL), which is for lack of a better term a bike shop.  However, calling DCL just a bike shop might be underserving the concept and vision.  Like a traditional bike shop, DCL provides bike services and cycling sales.  Things start to differ from a standard bike shop as DCL was built to support the Dialed Cycling Team. DCL also has partnered with some great people to provide an indoor cycling studio, coaching, bike fittings, strength training, physical therapy, nutritional services, and more.  The Dialed community also includes our Podcast, Vlogs, and a growing web presence, which will help further propagate our mission of growing both our team and the sport as a whole. DCL’s connections with key companies within the cycling industry will ensure that our Juniors receive the best possible pricing for the items they will need so we can lessen any potential financial burden of participating in our incredible sport. In essence, DIALED is becoming more of an institution that will serve as a fantastic incubator to nurture our Junior Development program.

“The hardest part of raising a child is teaching them to ride bicycles. A shaky child on a bicycle for the first time needs both support and freedom. The realization that this is what the child will always need can hit hard.” ~ Sloan Wilson

Closing note from Team Director,  Jake von Duering:

Cycling can be a “for life” activity as both a racer or enthusiast.  The sport will keep you fit, introduce you to some incredible people, and take you to some of the most beautiful places in the world.  It can be therapeutic, it can be challenging, and it can be your friend.  In short, cycling can be just about anything you want it to be, which is why it is one of the most popular sports and fitness activities on the planet.  It is my mission to encourage and advocate for life-long fitness through cycling.  The simple pleasure of riding a bike can have a profound impact on one’s life.  So much so that we need to ensure that our youths discover these benefits at a young age through adventures had on two wheels.  This is a big part of why I built Dialed Cycling, so let’s get more kids on bikes!
