FAQ

Is this the original Hydra or the newer Hydra2?

This is the original Hydra hub (690 points of engagement, 0.52 degrees), released in 2019 and produced through 2024. Industry Nine has since launched Hydra2 with 870 points of engagement (0.41 degrees) and a thicker axle, but the original Hydra is still a top-tier hub with proven performance and shares the same in-house manufacturing process and lifetime engineering support from I9. We have these in stock from a prior order and are offering them at a significant discount to clear.

Why is the front 28 hole and the rear 32 hole?

Asymmetric spoke counts are a deliberate choice from custom wheel builders. The rear wheel handles drive torque and braking forces and benefits from the extra structural redundancy of 32 spokes, while the front wheel sees lower loads and can run 28 spokes to save rotating mass and gain a small aerodynamic advantage. This is a common configuration for aggressive trail and enduro builds.

Will this fit my modern Boost frame?

The front (20x110 Boost) is current. The rear (12x142) is the older non-Boost standard. If your frame uses 12x148 Boost rear spacing (which is the current standard for most trail and enduro bikes from 2017 onward), this is not the right hubset for you. Confirm your frame's rear axle standard before purchase.

What does the 6 pawl, 115 tooth drive system do that other hubs do not?

Standard ratcheting hub designs have all the pawls engage the drive ring at the same time, which limits the engagement points to the number of teeth on the drive ring. Hydra independently phases each of its six pawls so they engage at offset positions, multiplying the effective engagement points by 6. The result is a continuous procession of engagement points rather than a step function, producing the telepathic feel that defined the Hydra platform.

Best For

Custom wheel builders and riders building an older Boost-front, non-Boost-rear (12x142) trail or enduro bike who want the proven Hydra engagement, mixed-drilling structural advantage at the rear, and made-in-USA build quality. Also fits older 20mm thru-axle gravity builds with a 12x142 rear.
