What is the difference between Skratch Hydration Mix and Super High-Carb Mix?
Two totally different products for two different jobs. Hydration Mix is low-calorie (80 cal per serving) and electrolyte-focused: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, with light real-fruit flavor. It replaces fluids and salts on long rides where you are sweating. Super High-Carb Mix is 400 calories per serving with an optimized 2:1 glucose to fructose ratio, designed to deliver 90 to 120 grams of carbs per hour during hard efforts. Hydration for hot rides and base training. Super High-Carb for races, intervals, and any sub-3 hour hard effort. Some riders run both, sipping Hydration in one bottle and Super High-Carb in the other.
How much Skratch should I drink per hour during a ride?
For Hydration Mix, aim for one bottle (16 to 24 oz) per hour in moderate conditions, up to two bottles per hour in heat. For Super High-Carb, one serving (400 cal, 100g carbs) per hour matches the upper end of what trained endurance athletes can absorb. If you are bonking on long rides, you are almost certainly under-fueling: most riders need 60 to 90 grams of carbs per hour on rides over 2 hours, which is more than one bottle of regular hydration mix delivers. Mix and match accordingly.
Does Skratch use artificial sweeteners or dyes?
No. Every Skratch product is sweetened with real cane sugar or real fruit, and colored with real ingredients like cocoa, cinnamon, or actual fruit. No sucralose, no aspartame, no acesulfame potassium, no Yellow 5 or Red 40. The ingredient lists read like a kitchen pantry because they were designed in one.
How does Skratch Hydration Mix compare to LMNT, Liquid IV, or Nuun?
All four target hydration but with different priorities. LMNT is high-sodium (1000mg per serving) with no sugar, designed for keto and very high sweat-rate athletes. Liquid IV is high-sugar and high-sodium, marketed as a rapid rehydration shot. Nuun Sport is tablet-based with artificial sweeteners. Skratch sits between them: real sugar for energy and palatability, moderate sodium for ride conditions, no artificial anything. The Skratch design philosophy is athletes drink more when the mix tastes lighter, so the formula is intentionally less sweet and less salty than competitors. If you struggle to finish a full bottle of LMNT or Liquid IV, Skratch is the answer.
When should I use Skratch Recovery Mix vs a protein shake?
Recovery Mix is designed for the 30-minute post-ride window where your body absorbs carbs and protein together for glycogen replacement and muscle repair. It uses a 4:1 carb to protein ratio, which sport science consistently identifies as optimal for endurance recovery. A standard whey protein shake is mostly protein with almost no carbs, which is fine for strength training but not for endurance recovery. For long rides, races, or back-to-back training days, use Recovery Mix. For lifting days or rest day protein top-off, a protein shake is fine.
Are Skratch Energy Bars and Chews real food?
Yes, and you can read the ingredient list to confirm. Energy Bars are rolled oats, real fruit (raspberries, cherries, pistachios, etc.), brown rice syrup, and sea salt. Energy Chews are real fruit juice, organic cane sugar, organic tapioca syrup, and pectin. No protein isolate, no soy lecithin, no gum acacia. They taste like food because they are food.
Is Super High-Carb worth it over regular hydration mix?
It depends on the effort. For an easy 2-hour ride, regular Hydration Mix is plenty and Super High-Carb is overkill. For a hard 2 to 4 hour ride, race, or interval session, Super High-Carb is the difference between bonking and finishing strong. The 400 calories per serving and optimized carb ratio let you absorb significantly more fuel per hour than regular sports drinks allow. If you do any hard efforts over an hour, Super High-Carb is worth keeping in the cabinet.
What Skratch flavors do you stock?
Stock rotates with seasonal demand but we typically carry Hydration Mix in Lemon + Lime, Orange, Fruit Punch, Strawberry Lemonade, Raspberry Limeade with Caffeine, and Variety. Super High-Carb in Lemon + Lime and Raspberry. Recovery in Chocolate, Horchata, Oat Milk Latte (vegan), and Strawberries + Cream. Energy Bars in Cherry + Pistachio, Raspberry + Lemon, Cinnamon + Oatmeal, and Peanut Butter + Chocolate. Energy Chews in Grape, Orange, Raspberries, Lemon + Green Tea, and Sour Cherry with caffeine. Call ahead at (360) 828-1436 to confirm a specific flavor is in stock.
Is Skratch good for hot weather rides?
Yes, this is exactly what Skratch Hydration Mix was designed for. Dr. Allen Lim formulated the original recipe for Tour de France stages in 95+ degree heat. The sodium content (380 mg per serving) targets the average sweat rate of trained cyclists in hot conditions, and the intentionally light flavor means riders actually drink enough. For PNW summer rides in the Gorge or up Larch Mountain, two bottles of Hydration per hour is the typical starting point.
Does Skratch contain caffeine?
Most Skratch products are caffeine-free. The exceptions are Hydration Mix in Raspberry Limeade with Caffeine (50 mg per serving) and Energy Chews in Sour Cherry with Caffeine (50 mg per pouch). Both clearly labeled. Caffeine timing matters for performance: 30 to 60 minutes before a hard effort is the standard guidance.
Can I use Skratch products with dietary restrictions?
Most Skratch products are vegetarian and gluten-free, but specifics vary by product. Energy Bars contain rolled oats and nuts. Recovery Mix Chocolate uses dairy milk protein. Recovery Mix Oat Milk Latte is plant-based and vegan. Energy Chews are vegan and gluten-free. Hydration Mixes are vegan and gluten-free. Read the ingredient list on each product page, or call (360) 828-1436 and we will walk through specifics for any allergy or restriction.
Why does Skratch cost more than store-brand sports drink?
Real ingredients cost more than synthetic ones. Real fruit costs more than artificial flavoring, cane sugar costs more than corn syrup, and real cocoa costs more than chocolate flavoring. Skratch is also formulated by a Tour de France team physiologist and produced in smaller batches than mass-market brands. You are paying for ingredient quality and formulation science, not marketing. For riders who use sports nutrition regularly, the cost-per-ride is meaningful but not extreme: about $1.50 per bottle of Hydration Mix in bulk, comparable to a coffee.
Do Skratch Labs products have an expiration date?
Yes. Dry mixes (Hydration, Super High-Carb, Recovery) have a typical shelf life of 18 to 24 months unopened, printed on the bag. Energy Bars and Chews are 9 to 12 months from manufacture. We rotate stock regularly and only sell products with at least 6 months remaining shelf life. Once opened, store dry mixes sealed and dry, bars and chews in a cool dry place.

The Technology
What makes Skratch Labs different
The engineering decisions behind every Skratch Labs product. Real differences, not marketing.
Real food, real science
Skratch was founded by Dr. Allen Lim, the physiologist who developed the original mix for Tour de France riders who could not stomach commercial sports drinks. Every product traces back to that same kitchen-first formulation philosophy.
No artificial dyes or sweeteners
Every Skratch product is colored and flavored with real fruit, real cocoa, real cinnamon. No Yellow 5, no sucralose, no acesulfame potassium. Reads like a kitchen ingredient list because it is one.
Optimized 2:1 glucose to fructose
Super High-Carb uses the carbohydrate ratio modern endurance science settled on for maximum absorption rate, around 90 to 120 grams per hour. Most legacy sports drinks still use pure maltodextrin which caps lower.
Designed to taste light
Skratch is intentionally less sweet than competitors. The Dr. Lim insight: athletes drink more when the mix tastes lighter, which solves underhydration better than any electrolyte ratio tweak.
