What Is Shimano Seal Grease and Where Does It Go?
Shimano Seal Grease is a purpose-formulated lubricant designed specifically for use in Shimano freehub bodies, hub bearings, and bearing seal interfaces. The grease is engineered to the viscosity and chemical compatibility requirements of Shimano's freehub ratchet mechanisms and bearing seals, where standard greases can either be too thin, allowing contamination past seals, or too thick, creating drag that interferes with the freehub's engagement feel. Applying the correct grease during freehub service maintains the sealing performance of rubber and nitrile bearing seals, which are the primary defense against water and grit ingress in hub internals. Using an incompatible grease can cause seal swelling, premature seal degradation, or grease migration that contaminates the ratchet mechanism.
The 50g tube provides enough grease for multiple hub service intervals and is the standard service quantity for shop use and home mechanics maintaining a fleet of wheels. During freehub service, the grease is applied to the seal contact surfaces, bearing races, and the ratchet body interface points per Shimano's service documentation for each specific hub model. This grease is also appropriate for use in Shimano Dura-Ace and Ultegra hub bearing interfaces where Shimano specifies their own seal grease rather than a general-purpose bearing grease. For any mechanic performing Shimano hub maintenance who wants to use the manufacturer-specified lubricant, the 50g Seal Grease tube is the correct consumable.
