How a cycling team puts kids on new bikes

Every kid deserves a new bike

Bikes for Kids is the Dialed Cycling Team's charity program. The team raises money and buys new bikes for kids who would probably never own one. Every dollar raised goes to the bikes.

The program has two goals that overlap: getting a bike to a kid who needs one, and getting more kids riding. A new bike that is actually theirs does both at once.

The team behind it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, separate from the lab, with its own bank account. Money given to Bikes for Kids goes to the team, not to the lab.

Bikes for Kids works with two partners in the community: the Police Activities League of Southwest Washington (PAL) and Vancouver Public Schools.

How it works

  1. It starts with ugly sweatersEvery year the team's Ugly Christmas Sweater Ride kicks off the campaign, and people really do ride in the sweaters.
  2. We raise money through the holidaysFundraising runs from that ride, through the holidays, and into the new year. Donations go through the team's GoFundMe.
  3. The money buys bikesAll proceeds go to new bikes for kids, which is the whole point of the program.

Where it has been

This is not a new idea for us: the video below was posted in May 2019, after a team charity ride and bike build party. According to its description, more than 20 Cannondale bikes went to kids in need that day.

When we launched this campaign in December 2024, the plan had the same shape. Teammates would assemble the bikes, deliver them, and run a bike safety workshop for the kids. Each kid would get a new bike, a Giro helmet, and a lock. The goal that winter was 10 to 20 bikes.

How you can help

  1. Donate through the Bikes for Kids GoFundMe. The team runs it, and the team is the beneficiary.
  2. Follow the Dialed Cycling club on Strava, which is where the team posts its ride invites.
  3. Send the GoFundMe link to one friend who likes bikes or kids, since most people like at least one of the two.
  4. Questions about the program? Send us a note through our contact page and we will get back to you.
