Lake Cycling questions, answered
Is Dialed Cycling Lab an authorized Lake dealer?
Yes. We're a premier Lake dealer based in Vancouver, WA. We carry the current Lake lineup including the CX333 premium road; CX400, CX302, CX242, and CX239 performance road; CX178 entry; MX242, MX239 Gravel, MX219, MX190 mountain and gravel; and MXZ winter cycling boots. Free sizing help included with every purchase in shop, and we handle warranty service directly through Lake.
Where can I buy Lake Cycling shoes near me?
If you're in Vancouver, SW Washington, Portland metro, or the Columbia River Gorge, come to the lab to try them on and dial in the right size. Anywhere else in the US, we ship daily and our online prices match what you'd pay at the door.
How do Lake's last shapes work?
Lake builds road shoes on multiple lasts from the narrow Race Last to the volume-friendly Comfort Plus Last. Most models also come in regular and wide widths. Bring your current cycling shoes when you come in and we'll match you to the correct last and width. Getting the right last matters more than getting the right size.
Are Lake shoes worth the price?
Honest answer: yes, if you ride enough to care about fit and durability. The CX333 and CX242 are premium-tier shoes that compete with Sidi, Bontrager XXX, and S-Works on performance, with significantly better fit options. We see Lakes come in for service five-plus years in, still ready to ride. Your cost-per-mile is lower than buying two cheaper shoes over the same period.
How does Lake compare to Sidi or Shimano?
Sidi makes great shoes if you have a narrow Italian-shaped foot. Shimano is a solid all-rounder at most price points. Lake's edge is fit variety, premium leather durability, and four decades of refining one specific thing: cycling shoes. If you've struggled to find a shoe that fits, Lake almost always has a last shape that works.
Are Lake shoes made in Italy?
No. Lake is an American brand founded in Evanston, Illinois in 1982. Current production happens in Asia, supervised by Lake's in-house design team. The American origin and 40-plus years of cycling shoe specialization is what defines the brand, not Italian manufacturing.
Can I get Lake shoes heat-molded for a custom fit?
Yes. Lake invented the heat-moldable carbon sole, and many of their premium shoes use heat-formable materials including heel counters. We can do basic heat molding in shop alongside sizing help. For deeper customization, certain Lake models can be sent back to Lake for full custom work.
What size should I order in Lake?
Lake uses European sizing. Most riders take their normal cycling shoe size, but Lake's last variety means your usual size in another brand may not be the same in Lake. We strongly recommend trying them on in shop, or send us your foot measurements and current shoes and we'll dial in the correct size and width before you order.
Do Lake shoes work for wet PNW conditions?
Better than most. The leather uppers on the CX333 and CX242 actually break in to your foot in wet conditions instead of degrading. Sealed seams and water-resistant materials handle the nine months of PNW rain better than synthetic shoes that pack out and crack. The MXZ winter boots Lake makes are the gold standard for sub-40-degree riding.
Will Lake shoes fit my SPD or Look pedals?
Yes. Lake road shoes are drilled for the standard 3-bolt Look/SPD-SL/Time pattern. Lake MTB and gravel shoes use the 2-bolt SPD pattern. Triathlon shoes use 3-bolt. Pedal compatibility is universal, so any Lake will work with whatever you're riding now.
How long do Lake shoes last?
With reasonable care, premium Lake leather shoes routinely last 5-plus years of serious riding. The synthetic uppers on the entry models last 3-plus years. Sole boards can be replaced at most cobblers if they wear through. We see Lakes come back for new BOA dials but rarely for upper failure.
Can you service my Lake shoes if something breaks?
Yes. BOA dial replacements, sole board wear, cleat thread issues, and minor upper repairs are all handled in shop. For deeper warranty work, we send the shoes back to Lake on your behalf and follow up until they're resolved. You don't deal with the manufacturer, we do.
Which Lake shoe should I buy for gravel riding?
The MX239 Gravel is Lake's dedicated gravel shoe and the one we recommend most often for riders in the PNW and Columbia River Gorge. The Stone/Black colorway hides road dirt better than light shoes. The MX242 also works as a gravel shoe if you want a lighter, more performance-focused option that crosses over to XC mountain bike use. Both come in regular and wide widths.
What is the difference between Lake CX242 and CX239?
Both are in Lake's Performance tier with dual BOA Li2 dials and full carbon soles. The CX242 stands apart with its segmented 6-zone upper designed to accommodate bunions, narrow or wide feet, and difficult foot shapes; available in fullgrain leather or Clarino Microfiber. The CX239 is Lake's most popular standard-fit road shoe with an integrated tongue for a firmer foot hold and a fibreglass-reinforced heel counter. Pick the CX242 if you have hard-to-fit feet or want maximum upper adjustability. Pick the CX239 if you have a standard foot and want a snugger, more locked-in race feel.
Does Lake make winter cycling shoes?
Yes. The MXZ303 and MXZ400 winter cycling boots are the gold standard for sub-40-degree riding. Lake has been making winter boots longer than any cycling brand in the industry, and the MXZ line is what other brands try to copy. We stock them seasonally and can special order any size or width if we don't have it on the shelf. If you ride through PNW winters, the MXZ is one of the highest-impact gear upgrades you can make.
Why We Ride It
Why Lake earns our recommendation
The result is a shoe that lasts. We see Lakes come in for service five, six years in, still ready to go. The premium leather on the CX242 and MX242 molds to your foot instead of cracking at the toe box. The BOA dial routing handles wet hands better than buckles. The Race, Sport, or Comfort Plus lasts (depending on your foot) fit better than what most brands manage to do with a single last shape.
Our shop sits in the Pacific Northwest, which turns out to be a great place to stress test footwear. Nine months of rain, cold morning starts half the year, roads that throw grit at your feet all winter. Customers around Clark County, the Gorge, and Portland metro keep their Lakes longer than any other shoe brand we sell. Some have ridden the same MX239 Gravels through three full seasons of Yacolt gravel and Sandy Ridge loam without the upper failing. If they hold up here, they hold up anywhere.
The Technology
What makes Lake Cycling different
The engineering decisions behind every Lake Cycling product. Real differences, not marketing.
Multiple lasts, not one
Most shoe brands make one foot shape and call it done. Lake builds road shoes on several different last shapes from Race to Comfort Plus, then offers most in two or three widths. The result is a shoe that fits your foot instead of asking your foot to fit the shoe.
Real leather uppers
Lake is one of the few cycling shoe brands still using real leather across its lineup. The CX333 uses premium K-Lite Kangaroo leather, which stretches to mold to your foot like a baseball glove. Most other Lake models offer fullgrain leather or Clarino Microfiber uppers, customer's choice. A well-cared-for Lake leather upper outlasts the sole.
Winter pedigree, year-round build
Born on Lake Michigan winters, Lake invented the first cycling-specific winter boot. That cold-weather construction philosophy carries through their everyday shoes. Sealed seams, water-resistant materials, real insulation where it matters.
Forty years of firsts
First MTB shoe in 1983. First cycling winter boot. First foam insole. First heat-moldable carbon sole. Lake didn't follow the industry. They built it. The current CX333 and CX242 represent four decades of refinement, not a marketing reset.

Flagship / race-ready
CX242
Lake's top-tier road shoe. Kangaroo leather upper, carbon sole, dual BOA Li2 dials. The one we recommend for serious riders who want a shoe that fits like a custom and outlasts everything around it.
All-day comfort
CX239
Dual BOA, slightly more forgiving last than the CX242. Our pick for the rider who wants premium feel without going all-in on race-narrow fit. Available in regular and wide.
Wide foot / value pick
CX219
Single BOA, microfiber upper, solid stiffness for the money. Available in regular and wide widths. The CX219 in wide is one of the best wide-foot road shoes you can buy under $250.
Entry / first nice shoe
CX177
Lake's entry-level road shoe. Real Lake fit and build at a friendly price. The shoe we put new road riders in when they want something that will last and grow with them.
Race / XC flagship
MX242
Lake's top MTB shoe. Kangaroo leather, carbon sole, twin BOA. Built for XC racing and high-effort trail days. Available in regular and wide.
All-mountain trail
MX239
The everyday MTB shoe. Stiff enough for hard pedaling, forgiving enough for hike-a-bike. Available in regular and wide. Our most-recommended mountain shoe across riding styles.
Wide foot / X-Wide
MX332
The X-Wide MX332. If you've never been able to find a mountain shoe wide enough, this is the answer. Genuine cycling shoe stiffness in a foot shape almost no other brand offers.
Entry mountain
MX177
Lake's entry mountain shoe. Real Lake fit and durability at the entry price point. A solid first 'serious' MTB shoe that won't get outgrown after one season.
Purpose-built gravel
MX239 Gravel
Lake's dedicated gravel shoe. Stiffer than a trail MTB shoe, more walkable than a road shoe, with reinforced toe protection for rocky sections. Stone/Black or Black/Gold colorways.
Wider gravel fit
MX239 Gravel - Wide
Same shoe, wide-foot last. We put riders here when their road shoe is wide and they want a matching fit for gravel. Holds up to PNW gravel mileage exceptionally well.
Race day / transition speed

Lake's triathlon shoe. Quick-entry heel loop, breathable mesh upper, drainage ports for wet transitions, single BOA for fast adjustment. Available in standard and women's narrow.
