What is the Challenge Gravel Grinder Pro Handmade TLR built for?

The Gravel Grinder is Challenge's tire for cruising gravel at speed, with more cornering confidence when the ground turns soft or wet. A diamond center tread clears dirt and mud and grips on grass and sand, while wide-spaced side knobs hook into soft ground and help guide the tire through ruts. The mixed tread rolls well and gives you a bit more cornering grip than a pure fast-rolling pattern.

This is the PRO handmade version in 700 x 40 with black sidewalls. It pairs a 260 TPI Super Polyester casing with Challenge's SMARTplus compound, a tougher and more cut-resistant rubber that holds its edges longer on gravel. A second layer of puncture protection (PPS2) sits on the inside of the casing for rough roads and gravel. It is tubeless ready and compatible with both hooked rims and ISO/ETRTO-compliant hookless rims. Challenge recommends its Smart Tubeless Sealant for setup.

How is the Pro Handmade different from the standard Gravel Grinder TLR?

Both use the same Gravel Grinder tread. The standard Gravel Grinder TLR is vulcanized with a 60 TPI nylon casing and is for hooked rims only. The Pro is handmade with a 260 TPI Super Polyester casing, SMARTplus compound and PPS2 protection.

Can I run it on hookless rims?

Yes. Challenge lists all of its handmade TLR tires from 33 to 45C, including this 700 x 40, as compatible with ISO/ETRTO-compliant hookless rims. It also works on hooked rims.

What conditions is the Gravel Grinder best in?
