SRAM questions, answered
Is Dialed Cycling Lab an authorized SRAM dealer?
Yes. We are an authorized SRAM dealer based in Vancouver, WA at 3200 SE 164th Ave, Suite 105. We stock the full SRAM lineup: AXS groupsets across RED, Force, Rival, and Apex; Eagle T-Type Transmission across XX SL, XX, X0, GX, Eagle 90, and NX; rotors, brake pads, chains, cassettes, cranksets, bottom brackets, and service parts. Our team are AXS experts, and warranty claims, AXS firmware diagnostics, and Transmission setup all go through us. Reach us at (360) 828-1436 or send us a message.
Where can I buy SRAM components near Vancouver, WA or Portland, OR?
Dialed Cycling Lab is the authorized SRAM dealer for the Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR metro area. We are located at 3200 SE 164th Ave, Suite 105 in Vancouver, about 15 minutes from downtown Portland across the I-205 bridge. We carry the full SRAM catalog in stock, including AXS road and gravel groupsets, Eagle T-Type Transmission, rotors, brake pads, chains, cassettes, and service parts. Walk-ins welcome, or call (360) 828-1436 to confirm a part is on the shelf before you drive over.
Which SRAM AXS groupset should I buy?
Three honest tiers. RED AXS is the lightest, the fastest shifting, and the one that goes on race bikes. Force AXS is the value pick for serious riders: same shifting feel, slightly heavier, half the price. Rival AXS is the wireless entry point, full AXS functionality at the lowest cost. All three share the same battery, charger, and AXS app, so upgrading later is just a swap of the parts you care about. If you are unsure, call us. We will spec the build with you in about 20 minutes.
Should I get 12 speed or 13 speed XPLR for gravel?
13 speed XPLR gives you a 10 to 46 tooth cassette in 1x, which is the right answer for serious gravel and bikepacking. 12 speed 2x is still the choice for riders who do mixed gravel and road and want the closer steps a double provides. If you ride mostly gravel with the occasional pavement detour, go 13. If you ride a lot of pavement and want tight steps in the middle of the cassette, go 12 speed 2x.
What is a mullet setup and is it right for my gravel bike?
A mullet setup runs a road or gravel shifter up front paired with an MTB drivetrain in the back, giving you a wider gear range than any pure gravel groupset offers. The most common build is SRAM road or XPLR shifters with an Eagle Transmission cassette (typically 10 to 50 or 10 to 52 tooth) and an Eagle MTB rear derailleur. It is the right call if you ride steep loose climbs, loaded bikepacking, or trail oriented gravel where a 46 tooth low gear is not enough. It is overkill if your gravel is mostly rolling and your steepest pitches are short. Mullet setups need careful compatibility planning since the cable pull and chain widths have to line up. We build them regularly and can spec the right combination for your bike.
What is Eagle T-Type Transmission and do I need it?
T-Type Transmission is SRAM's direct mount derailleur system. Instead of bolting to a derailleur hanger, the derailleur bolts directly into the frame's UDH mount, which eliminates hanger alignment entirely and lets the derailleur shift under full pedaling load. You need it if you ride aggressive mountain terrain, if you have broken a hanger in the past, or if you want the cleanest possible shifting performance on a modern UDH equipped frame. You do not strictly need it if your bike is older and not UDH compatible. If you are unsure whether your frame is UDH, send us a photo of the rear dropout and we will tell you.
What replacement disc brake pads do I need for my SRAM brakes?
It depends on the caliper. RED, Force, and Rival road calipers use the small pad shape. Level (MTB flat bar) uses a medium pad. Code uses the large pad. We carry organic and sintered options in each size, in stock at the shop. Bring your bike or your old pads in and we will match them on the spot, or send us a photo and we will identify the right ones over text.
How long does an AXS battery last?
On a road bike, a SRAM AXS battery lasts roughly 60 hours of ride time, or about a full month for most riders. Mountain Transmission batteries last longer per ride because they shift less often, often 60 to 80 hours. The battery charges in about one hour on the standard charger. We keep extra batteries and chargers in stock so you never have to wait. If your battery is holding a noticeably shorter charge than it used to, bring it in. Battery health degrades over years and replacements are inexpensive.
Are SRAM and Shimano components compatible?
Almost never. SRAM and Shimano use different cable pull ratios, different chain widths, different cassette spline standards, and different brake fluid in some cases. Mixing across groupsets is not recommended outside very narrow cases. If you are rebuilding a bike that has Shimano now and want to switch to SRAM, plan on replacing the full groupset including shifters, derailleurs, chain, cassette, and crankset to get correct function. The good news: an AXS conversion does not require new internal cable routing because everything is wireless.
Do you service SRAM hydraulic disc brakes?
Yes, in shop. We bleed Avid and SRAM hydraulic brakes daily using the Bleeding Edge tools and SRAM's Pro DOT bleed kit. We carry DOT 5.1 fluid, mineral oil for DB8, replacement hose kits in every length, and the Stealthamajig fittings for internally routed setups. A standard bleed turnaround is same day if you drop the bike off in the morning. Drop-in or by appointment, both work.
Can I upgrade from cable shifting to AXS without changing my frame?
In most cases yes. AXS is wireless, so you do not need to route cables through the frame at all. The required parts are: AXS shifters or controllers, the AXS rear derailleur (and front if 2x), an AXS chain, an AXS compatible cassette and crankset, and a battery and charger. If your current crankset and cassette are compatible with AXS speed counts (typically 12 speed flattop for road, 12 speed Eagle for MTB), you may be able to keep them. We will quote the conversion before you commit, usually a 5 minute conversation.
What is the SRAM Stealthamajig?
It is the proprietary hose fitting SRAM uses on its road hydraulic brakes to make internal routing easier. The Stealthamajig lets you route the hose through tight frame openings before connecting it to the lever, then snap it together once it is in place. We carry the individual fitting kits and the 5 pack for shop installs.
Do SRAM products come with a warranty?
Yes. Most SRAM components carry a two year warranty against manufacturer defects, with longer coverage on specific items like crank arms. Quarq power meters, RockShox suspension, and Zipp wheels all have their own warranty terms which we coordinate on your behalf. If something fails, bring or ship the part to us. We deal with SRAM directly so you do not have to.
Is SRAM more expensive than Shimano?
At the flagship tier, SRAM RED AXS is priced very similarly to Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and Campagnolo Super Record Wireless. They are all premium electronic groupsets and they all cost what premium electronic groupsets cost. Where SRAM is meaningfully different is further down the lineup. Rival AXS brought full wireless electronic shifting to a price point that Shimano has not matched, because Shimano's lower tier electronic groupsets remain semi-wireless with an in-frame battery. If you want the cheapest fully wireless electronic group, SRAM is currently the answer. Whether that matters depends on whether wireless matters to you.
Can you help me pick the right SRAM group for my bike?
Yes. This is most of what we do. Tell us the bike, your discipline (road, gravel, mountain), your budget, and roughly how many hours a week you ride. We will spec a group that matches the riding instead of one that matches a marketing tier. Call us at (360) 828-1436, send us a message, or walk in. The conversation usually takes 15 to 20 minutes and there is no sales pressure. If the right answer for you is the cheaper group, that is what we will recommend.
Why We Ride It
Why we love SRAM
The SRAM team is a huge part of why we love this brand. Our reps know us by name, they know our customers, and they treat every conversation like we are the only shop they work with. When a customer has a warranty claim, an AXS firmware quirk, a setup question on a brand new Transmission, or anything else that needs a real answer fast, the SRAM team shows up. Same day responses are normal. Going above and beyond is the standard, not the exception. We have lost count of how many times they have personally followed up with our customers to make sure something got resolved the right way. That kind of partnership is rare in this industry, and it shows up in every interaction we have with them.
Pacific Northwest riding is hard on drivetrains. Wet winters, gritty gravel, and a calendar that puts real miles on bikes year round. SRAM's sealed designs, replaceable wear parts, and modular Transmission architecture hold up better than anything else we've seen in this climate. The wireless removes one more thing for the weather to corrode. The Eagle 90 and GX T-Type groupsets we sell into PNW MTB builds outlast their chain twice over before anything else needs attention. Combine that engineering with a team that genuinely cares about our customers, and you have a brand worth loving.
The Technology
What makes SRAM different
The engineering decisions behind every SRAM product. Real differences, not marketing.
Wireless from the start
SRAM bet on wireless before anyone else thought it would work. eTap launched in 2016 with zero cables to route through a frame. Today every modern SRAM groupset is wireless and every battery is interchangeable across the catalog.
Eagle Transmission, no hanger required
T-Type Transmission bolts directly to the frame's UDH mount instead of a derailleur hanger. Perfect alignment out of the box, no hanger to bend on a rock, and a derailleur that shifts under full pedaling load. Biggest mountain drivetrain change since 1x.
13 speed XPLR for real gravel range
RED, Force, and Rival XPLR give you 13 speeds and a 10 to 46 tooth cassette in 1x. Steep gravel climbs to fast pavement in the same chainring, with tight enough steps that you never feel the gap.
DUB cross compatibility
One spindle interface across road, gravel, and mountain. Fewer headaches at swap time. Crank arms move between road and gravel builds without specialty parts, and DUB bottom brackets cover every shell standard.
