The Story

From a St. Paul bike shop to tools in over 70 countries

In 1956, Howard Hawkins and Art Engstrom ran Hazel Park Radio and Bicycle Shop in St. Paul, Minnesota. In the early 1960s they built a repair stand with their friend Jim Johnson, using old furniture and automotive parts, and other shop owners and mechanics wanted one too. In 1963 they began selling it as the PRS-1, short for Park Repair Stand, model number one. More tools followed, and in 1981 the founders sold the bike shop to focus on Park Tool. By its 60th year in 2023, Park Tool made over 500 products, sold in over 70 countries, from a facility a few miles from where the original shop stood. The color blue is a registered Park Tool trademark.
