Overview
When should cyclists use Roctane instead of standard GU Energy Gel?
The GU Energy Roctane Gel delivers the same 100 calories and carbohydrate profile as the original GU Energy Gel, but that is where the similarity ends. Roctane was built specifically for prolonged, high-intensity efforts where the original gel is not enough. It contains 3x the BCAAs, up to 3x the sodium (125mg vs ~60mg), and two additional amino acids you won't find in the original: taurine to maintain heart contractility and improve cardiac output during long efforts, and beta-alanine to buffer muscle acidity and delay the onset of fatigue during high-intensity work above lactate threshold. Total amino acid content per packet: 1,425mg vs 450mg in the original. GU Energy Labs designed Roctane for athletes doing high-mileage training, intense racing, or ultra-distance events where the body needs more than carbohydrates to keep performing.
Seven flavors, each with the same 100-calorie, 21g carbohydrate base. Caffeine varies: Cold Brew delivers 70mg per gel, double any other caffeinated Roctane flavor and the highest caffeine dose in the GU lineup. Blueberry Pomegranate, Vanilla Orange, and Salted Lime each carry 35mg. Cherry Lime, Strawberry Kiwi, and Sea Salt Chocolate are caffeine-free. Take one gel 5 minutes before activity and one every 30 to 45 minutes during. Vegan, gluten-free, kosher, dairy-free. Always take with water.

There's more to GU Energy than this one product. Our GU Energy page has the full GU Energy lineup we carry and more about the brand.
Visit the GU Energy page →What is the difference between Roctane and standard GU Energy Gel?
Both deliver 100 calories and 21g of carbohydrates per packet. Roctane adds up to 3x the sodium (125mg vs ~60mg), 3x the BCAAs (1,425mg vs 450mg), plus taurine and beta-alanine which are not present in the original. Roctane costs more per gel and is designed for longer, harder, or more demanding efforts.
How much caffeine is in each Roctane flavor?
Cold Brew contains 70mg of caffeine per gel, double the amount in other caffeinated Roctane flavors. Blueberry Pomegranate, Vanilla Orange, and Salted Lime each contain 35mg. Cherry Lime, Strawberry Kiwi, and Sea Salt Chocolate are caffeine-free.
What do taurine and beta-alanine do in Roctane?
Taurine helps maintain heart contractility and improve cardiac output during sustained long efforts. Beta-alanine helps promote the formation of carnosine in muscles, which buffers acidity and delays the onset of fatigue during high-intensity work. Neither is present in the original GU Energy Gel.
Should I use Roctane for every ride?
While there is no harm in using Roctane for every workout, GU designed it specifically for prolonged and high-intensity efforts. For shorter or lower-intensity training sessions, the original GU Energy Gel provides the same calorie and carbohydrate delivery at a lower cost per gel.
Does Roctane need to be taken with water?
Yes. Always take Roctane gels with a few sips of water for best absorption.
