What Does the PP-1.2 Brake Piston Press Do?
The Park Tool PP-1.2 Brake Piston Press is used to retract disc brake caliper pistons before installing new brake pads or after bleeding a brake. Its flat, tool-grade nylon face spreads pressure evenly across the piston face without scratching or gouging the piston surface, and the slim profile gives you access to calipers that have limited clearance around the pads. The PP-1.2 is designed to work cleanly on hydraulic disc brakes across road, gravel, and mountain bike systems without contaminating the pistons with grease or metal contact.
Replacing disc brake pads correctly requires pushing the pistons fully back into the caliper bore before the new, thicker pads will fit. You need to retract pistons when installing new brake pads, when pistons have extended too far after a bleed, or when reinstalling a wheel after pad contamination requires a reset.
Can I use a tire lever or screwdriver instead of the PP-1.2?
