Overview

What Do You Give Up With the Shimano BB-MT500 Versus the XT Version?

Bearing grade and a few grams, not fitment or function. The BB-MT500 sits at the entry point of Shimano's press-fit mountain range and fits exactly the same frames as the pricier Deore XT and XTR units: a 41 mm press-fit shell measuring 89.5 mm or 92 mm, the interface most brands label BB92. It takes 24 mm Hollowtech II crank spindles, which also covers FSA MegaExo, Race Face EXI, and Surly OD cranks running the same standard.

For a commuter, a hardtail that sees moderate use, or any bike where the bottom bracket is a wear item you would rather replace cheaply than baby, this is the sensible choice. Sealed cartridge bearings are not user-serviceable, so when it wears you replace the unit rather than repack it. Installation needs a proper bottom bracket press and removal needs a bearing puller, so hand this to a shop if you do not have both.

How do I know if this fits my frame?

Measure your bottom bracket shell. If the inner diameter is 41mm and the width is 89.5mm or 92mm, this is the correct part. That combination is commonly labeled BB92. If your shell is threaded, you need the BB-MT501 instead.

How is this different from the Deore XT BB-MT800-P?

Fitment is identical. The XT unit uses a higher grade bearing and weighs slightly less. If the bike is a commuter or sees moderate use, the MT500 does the same job for roughly half the price.

Will this work with non-Shimano cranks?

Yes. It is built for 24mm Hollowtech II spindles, which also covers FSA MegaExo, FSA MegaExo Light, Race Face EXI, and Surly OD cranks using the same 24mm standard.

Can the bearings be serviced?

No. The bearings are sealed cartridge units, so the correct fix for a worn or rough bottom bracket is replacement rather than a repack.

Can I install this myself?

Not by hand. Press-fit cups need a proper bottom bracket press to install squarely and a bearing puller to remove. Installing them with anything else risks damaging the frame shell.
