Overview

Which Road Frames Take the Shimano BB-RS500-PB?

Any road frame with a 41 mm press-fit shell measuring 86.5 mm wide, which is the interface commonly labeled BB86 or PF86. That covers a large share of carbon road and endurance frames from the last decade. It accepts 24 mm Hollowtech II crank spindles, so it works with Shimano road cranksets from Claris through Dura-Ace as well as third-party cranks built to the same 24 mm standard.

This is the road counterpart to Shimano's MT500 mountain unit, sitting at the accessible end of the range while using the same fitment as the pricier Ultegra and Dura-Ace press-fit bottom brackets. Sealed cartridge bearings mean the unit gets replaced rather than repacked when it wears, which on a bottom bracket at this price is the sensible economics. Installation requires a proper press and removal requires a bearing puller, since press-fit cups seated crooked will creak and can damage the frame shell.

How do I know if this fits my frame?

Measure your bottom bracket shell. If the inner diameter is 41mm and the width is 86.5mm, this is the correct part. That combination is commonly labeled BB86 or PF86. If your shell is threaded, you need a BSA threaded bottom bracket instead.

Will this work with my Shimano road crankset?

Yes. It accepts 24mm Hollowtech II spindles, which covers Shimano road cranksets from Claris through Dura-Ace, plus third-party cranks built to the same 24mm standard.

How is this different from the Ultegra or Dura-Ace press-fit units?

Fitment is identical across Shimano's road press-fit range. The Ultegra and Dura-Ace units use higher grade bearings and shave a few grams. This one does the same job at the accessible end of the range.

My press-fit bottom bracket creaks. Will this fix it?

Usually a cup that was not pressed in squarely, or a worn bearing. Press-fit shells are unforgiving about alignment, which is why installation with a proper press matters more here than on a threaded frame.

Can I install this myself?

Not by hand. Press-fit cups need a proper bottom bracket press to install squarely and a bearing puller to remove. Installing them with anything else risks damaging the frame shell.
