When do I need the olive and insert?

Every time a BH90 hose is cut to length, a new olive and insert must be installed at the cut end. The original fittings cannot be reused once the hose has been cut or disconnected from a fitting.

Is the BH90-SB different from the BH59 olive and insert?

Yes. BH90 and BH59 use different diameter hoses and different fitting hardware. They are not interchangeable. Use only the hardware that matches your specific hose spec.

Do I need any special tools to install the olive?

Yes. A hose barb insert tool (or carefully used pliers) is needed to seat the insert into the hose end. Shimano also makes the TL-BH10 hose barb insert tool for this purpose. A complete brake bleed is required after any hose service.
