What Is the Shimano SM-SH56 SPD Multi-Release Cleat?
The Shimano SM-SH56 is the SPD multi-release cleat, designed to release from the pedal when you twist your foot in either direction or lift and twist your heel. Multi-release is the recommended starting point for new clipless riders, trail mountain bikers, commuters, and anyone who values the ability to get a foot down quickly in unpredictable or technical situations. Shimano calls it a great choice for anyone new to clipless pedals.
Works with nearly all Shimano SPD two-bolt pedals. Sold as a pair. For use with SPD-compatible road, MTB, commuter, and touring shoes. Use SM-SH51 if you prefer single-release security over ease of exit.

SM-SH56 is recommended for new clipless riders, trail MTB riders who may need to dab quickly, commuters, and touring cyclists. SM-SH51 single-release is better for experienced riders who want maximum engagement security during performance riding.
Can I mix SM-SH56 on one foot and SM-SH51 on the other?
Both cleats work with nearly all Shimano SPD pedals, so the pedal will accept either one. Shimano doesn't give guidance on running one of each, so choose by how easily you want each foot to release.
Are SM-SH56 cleats compatible with other SPD-compatible pedals?
Shimano says the SM-SH56 works with nearly all Shimano SPD pedals. It doesn't list other brands' pedals, so we can't promise how it works on them.
