It depends on the derailleur. Shimano lists the Tiagra RD-4700-GS for a 34T low cog with a double crankset (32T with a triple), while the short cage RD-4700-SS tops out at 28T. Check your rear derailleur's maximum low sprocket before ordering.
What chain is recommended for the CS-HG500?
Use a Shimano HG-X 10-speed or HG 10-speed chain. Those are the chain types Shimano lists as compatible.
Is 11-34t wide enough for climbs on a road bike?
The 11-34t range provides a usable bail-out gear for moderate to steep road climbs, especially when paired with a compact 50/34t or Tiagra 52/36t crankset.
