Is the Shimano GRX RT-CL800 160mm Right for Your Gravel Setup?
The Shimano GRX RT-CL800-S 160mm is the most common rotor size for GRX disc brake builds, offering the best balance of stopping power, heat capacity, and weight for all-day gravel riding. Built on ICE TECHNOLOGIES FREEZA with a redesigned arm shape that reduces rotor heat deformation, the RT-CL800 addresses the ticking and rubbing noise that occurs when standard rotors warp slightly under sustained braking -- a real concern on long mountain gravel descents where braking loads are continuous rather than intermittent. The more robust arm geometry keeps the rotor truer to shape through heat cycles, delivering a quieter, more consistent brake feel from the top to the bottom of long climbs-to-descents.
The CENTER LOCK spline mount system makes installation fast and precise. At 160mm, this rotor works front and rear on most gravel setups, providing more power and heat absorption than 140mm without the added weight and rotational inertia of 180mm. Compatible with GRX BR-RX810 and BR-RX820 hydraulic disc brake calipers, and broadly compatible with other Shimano hydraulic disc brake systems using center lock hubs. The RT-CL800-S 160mm is the standard rotor recommendation for most gravel riders running GRX disc brakes.
