The Shimano SM-SH56 without cleat nut is the SPD multi-release cleat for shoes that already have captive nut inserts installed in the sole, letting you clip out by twisting your foot in either direction or by lifting and twisting your heel. How do I know if my shoe has captive nut inserts?
Most modern SPD-compatible shoes have pre-installed threaded nut inserts recessed into the sole cleat mounting area. If you can thread a cleat bolt directly into the sole without a separate loose nut, your shoe has captive inserts and this no-nut version is correct.
Is this compatible with SPD pedals from other brands?
Shimano says the SM-SH56 works with nearly all Shimano SPD pedals. It doesn't list other brands' pedals, so we can't promise how it works on them.
