FAQ

Can I use the CN-HG40 on a single-speed bike?

The CN-HG40 is a 7/8-speed-width chain and will physically fit a single-speed drivetrain with a matching width sprocket and chainring. However, Shimano makes dedicated single-speed chains that are better suited for that application. If you have the chain on hand, it will work, but a single-speed specific chain is the cleaner choice.

Does the CN-HG40 work with non-Shimano 7 or 8-speed cassettes?

Yes. The 7 and 8-speed chain width is an industry standard shared across Shimano, SRAM, and most other drivetrain brands at these speeds. The CN-HG40 is compatible with any 7 or 8-speed cassette or freewheel regardless of brand.

How do I join the chain without a quick link?

The CN-HG40 uses a chain pin for connection. A Shimano chain tool is required to press the connecting pin through the outer plates to join the chain. Alternatively, a compatible quick link for 7 or 8-speed chains can be used instead of a pin. Quick links are sold separately.

Best For

Commuter, city, hybrid, and entry-level road or MTB riders replacing a worn chain on any Shimano 6, 7, or 8-speed SIS indexed drivetrain.
