Why does the SRAM EX1 Chain exist as a separate eBike-specific chain?
The SRAM EX1 chain is purpose-engineered for eBike drivetrains that experience significantly higher torque loads than conventional pedal-assist or mechanical systems. Standard chains flex and wear rapidly under the sustained, motor-amplified force of an eMTB drivetrain, so SRAM built the EX1 wider and more robust than a standard 8 or 10-speed chain to handle that load without premature stretch or plate fatigue. The straighter chain line geometry of the EX1 system also allows for reduced lateral flex, which translates to quieter running noise across the full gear range and more efficient power transfer to the rear wheel under motor-assisted output.
At 144 links the EX1 ships with enough length for virtually any eBike drivetrain configuration, and it is compatible with the full SRAM EX1 8-speed eBike groupset as well as conventional 10-speed drivetrains running compatible components. The reinforced construction means longer wear intervals between replacements compared to standard chains used in high-torque eBike applications, which matters on a bike that accumulates miles quickly under motor assist.
